Mixdown services start at $100 US a song, and this rate can increase based on the complexity of the song. Some things that determine the additional cost are the number of tracks in the project, is there a lot of automation already in the project that I need to work around to do the mixdown, and how well the artist prepared and labeled the files for me.
I usually discuss the project with the artist before taking on any mixdown work, so the exact price will be known and agreed upon before I start. Additionally, if I will be doing the mastering of the song as well, there's a $10 discount on that aspect so a mixdown and master could cost as little as $130 US. Contact me to discuss the details and pricing of any mixdown work you want me to perform.
Mixdowns take from 2 to 4 days to complete, and I will let you know in advance if it will take longer for any reason. If you're interested in having me do a mixdown, here's some guidelines for prepping the files that will make everything easier for all involved:
- Once you are happy with the arrangement of your song, export each track in the project for the entire length of the song. Even if the part is only a few seconds long, it makes it ten times easier for me to line everything up in my DAW if every single track is the exact same length. I'll trim any silent sections here on my end, so don't worry about that.
- Be sure to tell me the EXACT tempo of the song.
- Export a copy of the entire song as a wav file as well, so I can hear the rough mix you have been using so far.
- In most cases exporting each track as a 24bit/44.kHz wav or aiff is sufficient. If you prefer to work at higher sample rates, that is fine too, but of course it makes transferring the larger files to me more difficult. Just something to be aware of.
- In terms of effects, generally I say to leave most of them on when you render the files. The exception are effects like compression and EQ, I prefer you disable those type of effects before sending the files to me unless it is absolutely critical to the sound of that track.
- Most Important! Please take the time to appropriately name each and every file something meaningful and descriptive. For instance, don't call them Track1.wav, Track2.wav, etc. Instead, call the files something like Kick.wav, Cymbals.wav, Bassline.wav, LeadSynth.wav, etc. This greatly speeds things up on my end, and is one reason I can offer mixdown services for the low rates I do.
- To send the files to me, I prefer artists use one of the following services (in order of preference):
YouSendIt.com
SendSpace.com
ShareSend.com
RapidShare.com
You may need to split up the files into multiple zip files in order to get them to me, it depends on the which services you use. If you prefer, I can also set up a private FTP site for you to upload the files to.
- Once I receive the track and have confirmed receipt of the PayPal payment, I'll start laying the track out in my DAW and see if I hear any issues that will need to be addressed by the artist before I start. If not, I'll start the mixdown and mastering (if I am doing both), and contact you with a link where you can download the finished song when the mixdown is done.
- Usually mixdowns are provided as a 24bit/44.1 wav file, unless I am also mastering the song, in which case the file will be a CD ready 16bit/44.1kHz wav file. If you need a different format, please let me know and I will be happy to accommodate you.
